The KAIST Orchestra. |
The KAIST Orchestra recently held its 14th Regular Concert. The featured soloist was jazz pianist Bo-ra Jin. The program harmoniously blended jazz improvizations with romantic classics, and included such popular songs as "Memory" from the musical "Cats".
The program began with the Korean folk song "Arirang" performed rhythmically in jazz style. Ms. Jin then followed with a surprise. Conductor Won-tae Song held up a violin, picked up the melody line of her jazz piano, and began to improvise with her! The effect was delightful.
After the concert, Ms. Jin explained how they worked together. "I just asked him to stand on the stage where I could see him while playing the piano."
The concert was not only performed by students but planned by them. This was done through a course in the Graduate School of Culture Technology on planning and management. Joo-yeon Chang, the KAIST student who worked as Deputy Director of the concert, said, "We did everything ourselves, from press releases to maintaining order."
Mr. Song was very impressed by their organization skills. He said, "We had a large audience, due to great public relations. It was very inspiring for our musicians."
